Sometimes I Don't Thrill You

So, yeah. Like I said, we had an ice storm, and you know we can't have any kind of weather here, unless I run around town documenting it. Just know, you'll be seeing a lot of photos of things dripping in ice for the the next few weeks at Churlita's house of cheese. Now, on with the Dinosaur Junior show...

Here is a picture of what the ice did to one of my favorite trees on the Pentacrest. Wah.

Okay, so the show on Tuesday night was really good. It was an early all ages dealy. And when I say all ages, it was high school kids up to people even older than me. I saw several folks with gray hair. I also recognized a lot of people from the hard core shows I used to go to in the eighties. I have no idea if they live in town, or if they drove from far away in the ice to get here, but I never, ever see them anymore.

I'm not very good at talking about music critic stuff. Basically, I'm on the level of "it had a good beat and you can dance to it..." Or in this case, for a bunch of old guys, they could totally rock, and according to what a guy I know named Matt said, the last time they played here they got into a fight on stage and broke-up shortly thereafter. The kids all seemed to be playing nicely together this however many years later.

Here it is close-up. Wah again.

I was surprised by the turn-out after the ice storm, but it was packed. The last time I was at a show with that many people in the Picador/Gabes was about ten years ago when Stereolab played. K. and I moved up front for the last couple of songs and the encore. There was a pretty big mosh pit, so we kept our distance. I was happy to see plenty of gray haired guys out there mixing it up though.

After the show, K. and I went back by the bar and we saw a guy K. went to high school with. He was there with another man and I had one of those "blog meets world" experiences. The man he was with, was a friend of the guy I was hanging out with this Summer. When he introduced himself to me, I recognized his name and said, "Hey, do you have a blog?" He looked kind of surprised and admitted that he did. I told him that I read it and had left comments on it in the past. He suddenly put it all together and asked me if I used to date his friend and remembered exactly which comments I had left. It was kind of cool. You never know if those meetings are going to be awkward or not, but he seemed totally great and we chatted for a bit before K. and I wandered downstairs to harass some other people we knew.

You have icy statues and Dinosaur Junior?

No fair: we have some drizzle and a Spice Girls reunion tour.

I can remember that band from back in the "coffee house years". A girl I was "hanging out" with was really into them. Always nice to see the old bands get together and get it going again.

Though it was a planned meeting back in June, I met the other Tara (knowing that you are one as well) who we are all familiar with. It was not awkward at all, but rather nice to have a starting point like the blog-world to get the conversation going.

That first photo of the statue at first glance is pretty funny. It looks like some bird had major issues.

Lol, small world. Totally cool that you met a blogger!

that broken tree hurts my heart

I'm usually impressed with a band if their songs have a good beat. It's the beat that gets me interested and then if the song is good than that's even better.

We had a little ice this morning, but not as much as your area had it. I'm sorry about your tree. :(

I'm going to guess that you ran into T? His blog is super-music-critic-fantastic!

My original comment was a lot funnier when you had no article posted and I had insomnia.

That's nice the blog-meeting went well and not creepy.

I loveloveLOVE the icey Pentacrest pictures. You could start a cottage industry, selling little pictures to the expats of scenes-we-love-so-well.

Sounds like an awesome show. I like a band that can bring out a good, mixed crowd. I also like not being the oldest person at a venue...

Churlita,
Philosophising: Ice; just because it's pretty doesn't mean it isn't dangerous 2.Just because there is snow on the roof doesn't mean there isn't
a fire in the furnace. ;)

Oh, that was one of my favorite trees too! I hope they plant one to take its place - I love those deciduous pine trees.

Mr Atrocity,

Don't feel bad, one of my daughters' friends just went to Vegas for the weekend to see the Spice Girls.

Evil-E,

I think it's cool that you and Tara met up.

I think the ice looks more like snot, but it's pretty gross either way.

Emma,

I know. I thought so too.

Margaret,

I know. You're heart would be breaking if you walked around our town this week.

Tara,

That's okay. What can you do?

Noregrets,

It is really sad.

DJ,

You guessed right. His blog does rock and he seems like a really nice guy. Double bonus.

David in DC,

I know, I'm sorry. I screwed up the post and published it before I wrote anything. Sleep deprivation was going to be my excuse too.

Booda BAby,

I'm glad you liked the photos. If I didn't live here, I'd be really nostalgic for it too.

LauraB.,

I heard that. I loved seeing so many older people there.

TLB,

YOu better come back and set everything to rights. Hurry. And then we can go to the Motley Cow again and eat steak and drink wine. Okay, I'll drink your wine.

REl,

Aren't most things that are that pretty, also really dangerous?

Ondine.

I don't know what they'll do with it. They haven't even cleaned the branches up yet. I bet they'll plant a new one.

A,

I only had a life this week. I'm sure it'll be another couple of months before I can pretend that I have a life again.

I saw several folks with gray hair.

Including the guy on stage singing and playing guitar ;-)

That blog comment encounter is really cool. I love when stuff like that happens.

luck be to you... i was tempted to finish up my holiday shopping at the liquor store this morning, but felt too guilty about copping out

Brando,

Exactly and the drummer was bald too.

Not,

I've had a few of those encounters. One was kind of weird but all the others have been great.

Margaret,

What better place to shop than the liquor store where you can be all spiritual and pick up your spirits.
