In the End I was the Mean Girl, or Somebody's In-Between Girl

It snowed today, and I'm in denial. So what?

I just want to reassure everyone that I wasn't depressed yesterday. I was just cranky. I am so not a morning person and sometimes I get whiny about having to wake-up and go to work. Mostly, I was making fun of myself with that post, because I know I have it pretty damn good, so bitching about the few things that aren't exactly as I'd like them is pretty ridiculous - though it obviously doesn't stop me. Anyway, what I really needed was some time to myself and I finally got that tonight. I ran outside even though it snowed and was really cold. Then I got home and did as little as possible.

Now, let's talk about one of my favorite obsessions, mix CD's. I made one for Mr. B this weekend of a bunch of dorky songs that we had talked about during our year long friendship. Since he told me about his Olivia Newton John obsession, I put "Magic" from the Xanadu soundtrack on there for him. Then, last night he sent me this text:

"I drove some guys from work 2 lunch 2day. 4got I had olivia in the stereo. Caught some serious shit. Best CD ever."

It's really all I could have ever hoped for when making that CD - a bunch of guys' guys in Southeast Iowa driving around cranking Olivia Newton John. Awesome.

Speaking of mix CD's. I made a kooky country'ish one for K. tonight. It pretty much encompasses anything close to country, from rockabilly to Southern Rock to folky to alt country. It's all over the place, just like me. Here it is:

1.) "Pancho and Lefty" - Townes Van Zandt. One of my favorite performers singing one of my favorite songs.

2.) "Jesus, Etc" - Wilco. Like everyone else, I loves me some Wilco.

3.) "Woo Hoo" - The 5. 6. 7. 8's. This could be my theme song...Or any spaz's for that matter.

4.) "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" - Charlie Daniels Band. I think it's high time I watched Urban Cowboy again.

5.) "Simple Man" - Lynyrd Skynyrd. K. mentioned once that she really liked this song, and I do too, so it's on the list.

6.) "Ode to Billie Joe" - Bobbie Gentry.

7.) "Islands in the Stream" - Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. You are not allowed to talk shit about this song ever. It's perfect.

8.) "Guitars, Cadillacs" - Dwight Yoakam. As I've said before, almost every country CD I make will probably have at least one Dwight Yoakam and Dolly Parton song. This CD has two of each.

9.) "Pride and Joy" - Double Trouble and Stevie Ray Vaughan. My brother love, love, loved Stevie Ray Vaughan and every once in a while since he died, I'll ask my brother, "Hey, whatever happened to Stevie Ray Vaughan? You just never hear from him anymore..." Then my brother will punch me in my arm and tell me I'm mean. It's funny every single time.

10.) "Hold On, Hold On" - Neko Case. I love her music and since my friend Poptart has been known to chum around with her, she must be really cool.

11.) "That's All Right" - Elvis Presley. I don't love every Elvis Presley song, but I love his Sun Sessions album, and "Suspicious Minds". I really love "Suspicious Minds".

12.) "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" - The Kendalls.

13.) "The Galway Girl" - Steve Earle. This is such a sweet little Irish ditty.

14.) "California Stars" - Billy Bragg and Wilco.

15.) "Moonshiner" - Allison Moorer. She's Steve Earle's wife and she performed with him when I saw him at The Englert. I could watch her play the tambourine forever.

16.) "Wichita Lineman" - Glen Campbell. I still think it's funny that he took Brian Wilson's place when the Beach Boys went on tour.

17.) "Honey Don't" - Carl Perkins.

18.) "Rave On" - Buddy Holly. I'm a big Buddy Holly fan and this is my favorite song of his.

19.) "Ain't That Lonely Yet" - Dwight Yoakam.

20.) "9 to 5" - Dolly Parton. Another movie I need to watch again real soon here.

21.) "Country Sunshine" - Dottie West. This song cracks me up.

22.) "Sunday Morning Coming Down" - Johnny Cash. This is about the opposite of the last song.

23.) "All My Tears" - Julie Miller. When I saw Emmy Lou Harris at Hancher, Julie Miller's husband opened up for her and he and Emmy Lou did a great version of this song.

Okay. Are you all countried out? I think we've pretty much run the gamut here.

Churlita,
I have most of these. I'm not quite as eclectic as you, but close I think.

one of my favorite albums is EmmyLou with Mark Knopfler. I-love-country. Dolly Parton reminds me of a roommate in college. We'd blast Dolly and jump on our beds like trampolines

Oh wow-you have some of my fave songs on here. LOVE the movie 9-5. Nothing like locking your overbearing, sexist boss up for a month or so...

First off: I love me some Urban Cowboy. Second: Have I ever told you how I would dress up as Kenny Rogers and my grandpa would pretend to be dolly parton and we'd put on a variety show singing islands in the stream?

He probably would've caught more shit if her song "Let's Get Physical" came on. Hehe.

You've got an excellent selection of songs, there. I love "Woo Hoo", "Devil Went Down to Georgia" and of course "Sunday Mornin' Coming Down". One of my all-time favorite Cash songs.

I tend not to think of myself as a country music fan, but this is all very reasonable country, you know? :-) Love it.

Pancho and Lefty sung by Townes Van Zandt might be my 5th favorite song ever! That is a great CD.

That mix is the polar opposite of Xanadu, yet equally good.

That sounds like an awesome CD! A very nice compilation. I, too, love the Emmy Lou / Mark Knopfler CD. I also love the one with Robert Plant / Alison Krauss.

Rel,

I'm not that eclectic, I'm just missing a music filter. I like almost all of it.

Movin',

That sounds like tons of fun. At first I thought you were going to say she looked like her and I was going to be so jealous.

Mrs.,

You should. It's fun to make dorky CD's.

DJ,

Don't think I haven't considered doing just that to my boss.

Susan,

I didn't think it was possible, but I like you even more now.

Tara,

I know. That song is so sad but so wonderful all at the same time.

Nor,

If you're serious, let me know. I can give you my email address and you can send me your address. I don't need any money.

Mr Atrocity,

Sorry. You can do the same to me about John Denver if it makes you feel better.

LauraB.,

Yeah. It's the outskirts of country.

Q,

What are your first four favorite songs?

Minyo,

Those are both awesome albums.
