Show Me Where to Look, Tell Me What Will I Find

The Saturday Scavenger hunt word this week was chosen by Tara at Eclectic Spaghetti. She said shine and we did. So, first here is a shiny neon bagel sign at night.

Then here are some things I took a shine to this weekend. First and foremost, I took a shine to the mojitos that my favorite bartender S. made for me tonight. he brought the mint that he grew in his garden and everything. It was the perfect drink with all this heat and humidity. And best of all, they were served with bendy straws, and you know how much I love bendy straws.

Then I took a shine to boys wearing novelty t-shirts. It isn't often that I run into two. Count 'em, two different boys wearing novelty t-shirts out and about, but it happened this week.

I didn't drink enough to want the other guy, and I have no idea if the bottom guy really hits like a girl, but I appreciated the messages they were sending in their clothing.

I Feel Like Swirlin' and Dancing

Here's me and my girl crush bringing out the guns.

Today two of my friends celebrated birthdays. One was my friend A. who lives in Texas and who I love and I've blogged about how wonderful she is on here several times now. I really wish I could have bought her a drink and had my daughters watch her boys so we could go out and properly acknowledge the day of her birth. Maybe next year...

I was, however, able to help my friend Schecky celebrate hers. Supper Club was at the Hilltop this week, which also happened to be where Shecky was hanging out, so it was perfect. It was the first time I had seen Shecky in about a month, so I was so happy to get to shoot the shit with her. I normally get home from Supper Club about eight, but my favorite bartender S. and his lovely wife K. came by to escort Shecky to The Dublin and they asked if I would meet them there. Who was I to say no?

The Dublin was great fun. We had all kinds of wrong conversations and my favorite bartender came close to making me spit out my drink not just once, but twice. My friend W. told me that some very attractive guys she knew were hot for me. Here's my question, why wouldn't they tell me that? If you're a single guy who reads my blog and you're attracted to someone, do you tell them? And if you don't, why not?

We also discussed some of the details of the upcoming weekend. I know I mentioned it once before, but on Saturday I'm meeting the Dublin girls pool team at the state pool tournament in the Quad Cities. It should be a frighteningly good time. We may or may not have the topless pillow fights we teased my friend L.'s husband about, but I'm sure we'll be up to no good in many, many other ways. When I asked the girls what the men at the pool tournament were like, they said it was hit and miss. Shecky said that out of 500 men, there might be 100 that were doable. As far as I'm concerned, those odds aren't too bad. Or maybe I've just lived in Iowa City too long...

You Have to Believe We Are Magic

I don't want you all to be too shocked or worried that I'm starting to get my shit together or anything, but I actually drank responsibly tonight. We were originally going to go to Solon Beef Days, and then never quite made it. Instead we went downtown, and it became a night of wizards and intrusive guys...So, maybe not that much different than any other night in Iowa City.

I probably wasn't in the right space to be out and about, but it was Friday and Stinky had another sleepover and I had spent all day with my co-workers and all evening with thirteen year olds, and blah blah and you've heard this whole thing from me before. Sometimes by the end of the week, I just need to hang out with adults I don't work with, to get a little perspective. I think what I really wanted, was to be invisible so I could watch people and listen to their conversations, but not have to interact. So, maybe I should have just stayed home and watched a movie, but I love my friends and I always have fun when we hang out.

After we were there for about an hour, some young boy plopped down at our table and started bothering my friend T. Eventually, he looked over and noticed me and did that thing where he pretended he knew me from one of his classes. He then admitted that he didn't know who I was and introduced himself. In these situations, I try to let the young drunk boys know exactly how old I am in hopes that it will scare them away. I told him that the last time I was in a class was almost twenty years ago. He called bullshit, so I brought out my driver's license. He told me he thought I looked amazing and I offered up my pat response when any drunk guy tries to schmooze me. It goes something like this: "Yeah, I get real pretty and real young looking when everyone else gets drunk." Of course, he protested and then when I went to grab my ID back, he kissed my hand. I don't know why certain guys think women will be charmed by that, but it is one of the biggest cheese ball maneuvers out there.

I figured it would be a good time to head to the bathroom, even though it would mean that the drunk guy would again turn his affections on my friend T. She wisely asked him to leave, and he was gone by the time I got back. Whew. Now, if you think the fun stopped there, you were wrong. It was almost midnight at that point and there were tons of kids and their parents standing in line to purchase the new Harry Potter book at Prairie Lights. I was hoping there would be more kids dressed up like wizards, but I was wrong. Of course, I knew some of the parents in line and it's always fun to come stumbling out of a bar, reeking of cigarette smoke and stale beer, when you encounter your children's friends' parents.

We made it to our last stop and wandered through the beer garden at the Picador. While some of our friends were chatting, another invasive drunk guy came over to me and asked me to help him put on his shirt. Um, okay, I guess. He tried to talk to me about the band that was playing upstairs and then stopped and asked me to help him buckle his belt. That was it. I think I said something like, "No thanks. I don't really do that for guys." (as if it was a such a common request that I had a moratorium on it) I was pretty much done at that point. I was tired, and too zoned out to be any fun for my friends and sick of drunk, invasive guys. Maybe I'll have to go out with my special jinx powers next time and mess up their computers and send dark clouds over all of their houses.

I Feel Summer Creepin' In and I'm Tired of This Town Again

Hey, my snaps are back.

I have a tendency to be a bit of a shut-in. I'm much worse in the Winter, but in general, I much prefer my own little world, to the big ugly one outside. Of course, the problem with that, as I've mentioned before, is that I spend way more time talking to people I don't like at work, and not enough time hanging out with my kick-ass friends. I'm trying to be a little more open to actually leaving my house to spend time with people I actually like. I still need my alone time, and if I go out late and drink, I don't get that. Then I feel kind of off-kilter for the next day or two.

My trial solution to this harrowing issue, is to do drive-bys. I go out and meet my friends for an hour or so and go home and either hang by myself, or spend time with my girls. It's working well so far. If I don't drink, I can see my friends, go home early and geek out all I need to.

Tonight, I met my friend T. at the Dublin Underground. Someone else I knew was celebrating her birthday there. I even braved the sea of people who were downtown to see The Roches and Nanci Griffith performing for free. I made the mistake of stopping to talk to someone and got hit by at least five different people's portable chair holsters, so I stopped my conversation short, and kept moving.

The hour I spent at the Dublin was perfect. I introduced my friend T. to my neighbors who were there and we sat at a booth and played with our bendy straws and laughed until I left for home. I made it back by nine, picked Stinky up from her movie and took her to a friend's house for a sleepover and still had time to watch a movie with Coadster after she made it back from a neighborhood party. I wish everything in my life was so easy to balance.
